ultrapenumbra | MOCK EXPLORATION: DUNGEON EXPLORATION

So you've been going about your new lives as Pokemon for the past week... which you may or may not have gotten entirely used to by now, but at least it's not as bad as things were when you first woke up. You haven't really gotten many leads on why this happened or how to change back, outside of, perhaps, conversations with Kangaskhan and Wigglytuff... but even then, it was kind of vague and unhelpful, outside of the lead of these... "Mystery Dungeons."

And, as luck would have it, Wigglytuff and Kangaskhan seem to want you all to gather in the center of town! They say it's an opportunity for you all to get experience with Mystery Dungeons... and maybe a little bit of treasure on the side, too. Who knows, it might even give you answers! ...I mean, probably not, since you're in the tutorial dungeon phase, but hey. It's worth a shot, right?

So, when you arrive at the center of Pokemon Square, you'll find the familiar faces of Wigglytuff and Kangaskhan there, but also a distressed-looking Butterfree and Metapod. Kangaskhan is quietly comforting the two unfamiliar Pokemon, while Wigglytuff addresses you directly...

"Hey, friends! I figure since you're new and here under some pretty weird circumstances, you might wanna take care of this. See, Ms. Butterfree's kid Caterpie's gone missing, and since they're my friends, I want to help! They're pretty sure he's lost in a Mystery Dungeon, and since he hasn't been gone that long... it's probably pretty easy for some new people to take care of.

So, since you're probably gonna want to go through Mystery Dungeons to figure out what's happening with you friends, I figured this would be a good way to get you started! You're probably gonna want to split into four teams of five to deal with things. I'll answer some questions for you, and then I'll take you where we think the Mystery Dungeon is!"

[Just a little bit of an exaggeration! It'll be a little hard to climb up out of the water, anyway.]

[Shay flinches, reflexively hostile at the uh... bug thing? (Not that he cares exactly what they are or thinks it matters at the moment.) Soon enough he settles down as much as he's capable of doing since they're not attacking or anything.]

Possibly. I've been practicing, but I don't exactly have waterwings here.

[Are the holes big enough to fly down into?]

Er, I can swim, kinda?

[In that weird way that water lice do. he is, after all, a sea roomba.]

[Well... it's kind of hard to judge, because as soon as Shay finishes speaking, the ground starts to rumble a little... and then the floor starts shifting.

Good thing the room is a tube, because it's suddenly turning upside down!]

[SCREAAAAAAAAAM!!!

sena runs around so much in his panic that he actually manages to defy the laws of gravity for a split second and start scaling the rapidly turning walls, almost ending up on the ceil...floor? ceiling?

top of the tube, right.

anyways he almost ends up there but then the laws of gravity catch up with him and he falls down on his back, still watery-eyed.]

W-whaaaaaaa-?!

What the...?!

[Upside down... oh no. Goodbye physics, we hardly knew ye. As soon as the ground starts to shudder, Shay hops up from the ground and starts flapping. Which probably won't help much if this room is indeed turning into a dunk tank.]

[Well, the good news is that they haven't been dunked into the holes in the floor. The bad news is... the holes in the floor have switched places with the holes in the ceiling.]

Erk...!

[First things first, Sena needs to try and get himself upright.

Then he can look up at the holes in the ceiling. The water isn't coming down from them or anything isn't it? They're not gonna suddenly get drowned in a deluge?? pls no.]

[Nope! The holes in the ceiling are letting sunlight in, while if you go over to one of the holes currently on the floor, there's water underneath. Seems like you're in some sort of tube.]

[Oh. Oh, joy they appear to perhaps be stuck inside an actual rotating tube. Or something. After a moment of deliberating, Shay hovers down and try getting a grip on the other with his rather tiny not quite fully avian talons.

Because his new partner better be useful in some way later on- so assuming Shay finds his grip, he's gonna try flying up into the light. As fast as he can.]

[If he actually tries to fly out through the hole, he's... going to hit what seems to be an invisible barrier, unfortunately.]

[By now she's actually gotten a pretty decent handle on this new body, and some of the things it can do.

Unfortunately, she'd taken her sweet time in catching up to the others, so the room starts to spin almost as soon as she makes her way inside.]

Whoa! Everyone okay?

[At least with everyone flying now there's a straight shot to the other side!]

[Yipes! Sena flails around a bit when he's grabbed, but oddly enough calms down a bit more when they're airborne.]

I g-g-guess? Except with everything spinning around...

Ungh...!

[Not fun bumping full speed into whatever keeps them from going up toward the light, which means they're stuck following wherever this tube leads them toward. He peers at Pidge and wonders who else is going to bumble their way into the newest ragtag team.]

Just fine. [He's had way worse.] Can't wait until we're finally done with this place.

[Time for the two birds to fly along the tube?]

[If nothing else, it does look like there might be some stable ground at the end of the tunnel, since as you get closer you can see a stationary treasure chest! It's not under a light source so it might've been a little harder to see from the start of the tunnel, but it does seem like the end is in sight.]

[She wasn't really expecting much, given that this whole place has been kind of weird. But it's a relief to see that the others are relatively unharmed, at least.]

Hopefully that'll be soon.

[Not that she's not enjoying it, though she'll feel a little better once they've made it to the end of the tunnel. So she takes a deep breath and picks up the pace, hoping to catch up with the other two.]

[As you get closer to the treasure chest, it does look like it's soon. There doesn't appear to be anything in the way of traps around the treasure chest, and it doesn't seem to have a lock or anything.]

[oh hey. huh.]

Um...maybe you could drop me on that? I'm pretty fast, so...

[use him as a bomb detector, basically. he might not be able to get the thing open properly on his own, but he can at least set anything off?

okay sure it doesn't look like it's rigged or anything, but he also trained with hiruma. when you know hiruma, then you know Everything Is Rigged, Somehow.]

[it's not rigged, so if sena is dropped on it, it will be fine.]

Hmn.

[He examines the area around the treasure chest and doesn't see anything out of the ordinary as far as he can tell by sight alone.]

If you insist.

[And while Shay doesn't literally do exactly that, he flies down as low as he dares and lets Sena plop back onto the ground.]
